The Elective Surgery Information System (ESIS) is a patient-level collection of elective surgery waiting list data from approved Victorian public healthcare services. ESIS was introduced in 1997 to provide electronic waiting list data to the department.

Elective Surgery Information System (ESIS) manual

The Elective Surgery Information System manual (ESIS) 2022-23 is for health services, their vendors and data users who report or use ESIS data.

The purpose of the ESIS manual is to:

  • provide definitions of data elements
  • how to compile and submit data
  • information for contributors and data users
  • code lists and links to reference files
  • contact details for support services

Inclusive collection and reporting of sex and gender data

This guidance note supports staff in Victorian health services to understand, plan and implement changes to sex and gender data reporting requirements. It provides guidance on how to collect patients’ sex and gender information respectfully and sensitively in line with the new requirements.
